You may be familiar with Cookie’s aquatic creatures, you may have even worn one as they were the main feature on classic Weird Fish T shirts for several years, and a regular feature on his Cookie Cartoonery Facebook site. His original thoughts behind the fish with its familiarly glum expression, may just surprise you and make you realise why you relate to it and have more in common with the Cookie Fish than you expected. Here is Cookie’s description:

“My history of drawing my fish and sharks at around 50 years, is brief. I would like people who like the characters and seem to relate to them in some way, to know that it’s history and ours, are directly connected.

It is believed that approximately 370 million years ago, fish first crawled from the primordial soup and onto dry land. This is the beginning of our History which by and large, merrily skips through this initial monumental bit. It rapidly moves on to the development of lungs and legs, soon becoming tree climbing rodents which rapidly developed into tree swinging apes which before you know it, were standing upright to peer above the tall grass of the plains and thus evolving into hunter gatherers and club swinging cave dwellers, summed up in a variety of evolution illustrations.

The only problem with that is, I feel we’ve missed a huge chunk of our history. Those first brave fish with the pure spirit of adventure who dared to crawl from their natural habitat, can be recognised as the first brave entrepreneurs. Who knows what dangers they faced. I would imagine they were the prey of anything that moved. Their gradual adaption to life on land and all the daily and nightly terrors, dangers and harrowing feats of survival may have endured a million years or more. This forgotten period is where our ancestry really began, because whatever jeopardy and uncertainty those first adventurers faced, they and all their descendants survived!... you are living proof! You still carry those first genes and the traits that go with them. This is why you’re a survivor, in search of adventure, determined to keep going and see what is around the next obstacle, refusing to give up crawl back into the primordial soup. I doubt ancestry research will go back that far, but if it did, there’d be a grainy photo of a fish, standing by a slimy pool, with a look of resignation upon its face, a look that says - throw what you want at me and do your worst, I’m getting out of the sludge and I’m keeping going.” – Cookie.

Cookie with his business partner Kim Gristy enjoy creating children’s books. Their first published book No, Squirrel! is fun interactive book for 3-5 year olds. Many more book ideas are being created watch this space!!!

So next time you see Cookie’s cartoon of a fish, take a moment to relate to it, for it represents your ancient relations, your multi million times great grandparent, you are living proof of their success, therefore YOU are a success! Cookie is also working on an illustrated book all about these early relatives of ours, but in the meantime, have a look at our wide range of T Shirts and prints. Cookie cartoons regularly appear on his Facebook site just for the fun of it, he draws for the love of it
